If you have a periodic tenancy (running from week to week or month to month) your landlord cannot increase the rent more than once a year without your agreement. If you have a fixed-term tenancy, your landlord can try to increase it once the term ends. Any rent increase must be fair and realistic, meaning in line with average local rents. They must give you one month’s notice for weekly or monthly tenancies, and six months noice for yearly tenancies.
