Balderton Capital is a London based venture capital fund which invests in European founders with a global ambition. It has invested in over 230 companies since 2000 including Revolut, CityMapper and Vivino.
Revolut was founded in 2015 and started off as an app which allows you to exchange currencies at interbank rates, send them through social networks, and spend with a multi-currency card. Since then, Revolut has $1.7B in funding and expanded their offerings to crypto currencies and stocks, positioning itself as the app for "all things money".
Balderton invested in Revolut because the addressable market is huge and they were impressed by the "exceptionally bright team solving a major pain-point with an extremely elegant, mobile first user-interface".
